afrifiber Launch Ceremony to inaugurate internet service and fiber optic network

afrifiber held a launch ceremony at the Djibouti Palace Kempinski to inaugurate a state-of-the-art fiber-optic network that is providing internet services to businesses and consumers in the Republic of Djibouti. afrifiber has set sail on an extraordinary mission to revolutionize internet service provision and connectivity.

This landmark event is not just about technology – it’s about empowering communities, bridging the digital divide, and creating limitless opportunities for progress. By enhancing digital connectivity, afrifiber can improve the productivity of workers and businesses, increase access to markets and information, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

The event was attended by His Excellency Radwan Abdillahi Bahdon, the Minister of Communication, Posts and Telecommunication, His Excellency M. Mohamed Abdoulkader Moussa Helem, the Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, His Excellency M. Kassim Haroun Ali, the Minister Delegate for Decentralization, His Excellency M. Hassan Houmed Ibrahim, the Minister for Infrastructure and Equipment, His Excellency M. Moustapha Mohamed Mahamoud, the Minister for National Education and Vocational Training and His Excellency M. Moumin Hassan Barreh, the Minister of Muslim Affairs and Wakfs.

At the ceremony, Sohail Sultan, Chairman iibGroup Holdings said, “The Government of Djibouti, under the leadership of His Excellency the President, is executing Vision 2035, a clear roadmap developed by the Government to raise per-capita income through diversification of the economy and investment in human capital. This is a hugely exciting and optimistic time for the nation, and we are privileged to be a part of it.”

afrifiber joins The Digital Council Africa

afrifiber Is Officially Licenced in Djibouti.

In breaking news for East Africa, afrifiber, a privately-owned fiber network operator, has made history by acquiring a licence in Djibouti, one of the few-remaining African countries where there was a historical monopoly over telecommunication services. afrifiber plans to bridge the digital divide in support of the Djiboutian Government’s Vision 2035, by democratising access to Broadband Internet and Data Connectivity, introducing a range of new and innovative services with excellent customer service and attractive pricing.

Mr. Sohail Sultan, Chairman of afrifiber and representative of its largest shareholder, Bahrain-based iibGroup, says “As a global investor active in a range of sectors, iibGroup is extremely proud of its ICT initiatives in Djibouti. Our intention is to build a world-class business that will benefit the consumers in Djibouti and the wider East African region. We believe that access to data and the internet is a fundamental right and should be available to all”. afrifiber forms part of a broader ICT platform being built by iibGroup in Djibouti, comprising connectivity, a large-scale Tier-III-certified data centre and an accompanying technology park (“AfriData”), aimed at maximising the economic impact of Djibouti’s new and existing ICT infrastructure.

Alongside the Chairman, Mr. Wiaan Vermaak has been appointed as the CEO of afrifiber. He is a 30-year telecommunications veteran, having held many leadership roles in various companies across Africa. He brings a wealth of experience and know-how to the position and is in the process of assembling a top team that includes reaffirming afrifiber’s commitment to growing and developing local talent in Djibouti. iibGroup Awarded Licence for Construction of Fiber Optic Network in Djibouti

The new network, afrifibre, will be the first in Djibouti to combine high speed, secure communication and reliability, enabling users across education, government and business to transform their information systems and e-services.

Construction of the network will begin during July 2019 with operations in Djibouti foreseen from early 2020. Further upgrades of the network are planned to extend geographic coverage into the wider Eastern African region and beyond.
